Spring Newsletter – 2008
Happy Spring everyone! I could start this spring off with a newsletter with tips on a healthy back while gardening. However I have had a bigger demand for information on nutrition and even more so on research, so I am going to combine the two.
Nutrition
There are many Diets out there ? but a diet never works! ? We have to make a lifestyle change, similar to what you have done. You have incorporated chiropractic into your lifestyle as a way to be healthy and plan for a healthy future.
Nutrition is an integral part of health as well. While having a healthy nerve system your body can absorb the healthy nutrients it needs for growth, healing and repair.
I am going to break down nutrition into when and what you should eat at different parts of the day and then also discuss children?s nutrition ? the ones that need the best snacks and foods. So many think they are just kids and can eat anything! ? Wrong! ? This is where we lay down the path for a healthy tomorrow. If we feed our children poorly now, we start training their bodies to have high LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff), and insulin shunting (blood sugar problems). We need to start right, right from the beginning.
Now we are going to look at when and what to eat during the day.
Morning
High to Moderate Carbohydrates/Low Proteins/ Low Fats
The morning should focus on the carbohydrate category. It is food that is needed in your system because it has been depleted from the day before and you will need power for the upcoming day. This is the safest time to consume them because you have the rest of the day to burn them off. Too many and you will get less power, so avoid excessive bread, sugars, and cereals. Carbohydrates are the best source for high-quality usable fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Do eat breakfast with a small amount of protein and good fat to moderate blood sugar levels. Examples of good morning fats are flaxseed, walnuts, almonds and almond butter.
Eat fruit in the morning and make sure you consume at least 4 glasses of water before lunch time to re-hydrate your cells and tissues vs. dehydrating them with caffeinated beverages.
For late morning snacks do not add too many more carbohydrates. Try adding one more piece of fruit, one more serving of whole grains, or move toward vegetables or eggs and vegetables.
Midday
Moderate to Low Carbohydrates/ Moderate Proteins/ Low to Moderate Fats
Key is to recognize not all meals are created equal. The morning was important to replenish your power stores to face the long day ahead. Now you have used your body to some degree, and have carbohydrates still left from the morning in your system, you need some food for healing and repair. You need some protein.
If your job is physically demanding or you exercise later in the day, you will need some extra carbohydrates midday for the extra power boost. The best midday carbohydrates in medium to small amounts would be sweet potatoes, potatoes, corn, peas, squash and beans for example. If you want pasta on a day have it during lunch vs. the end of the day. Midday fats for example are olive oil, ground flaxseed, and avocado. Preferred midday proteins should be light, lean and in medium portions such as egg whites, tuna, fish, chicken, or turkey, lentils, lima beans and unprocessed soybeans.
Late afternoon/ Early ? Evening snacks
Medium carbohydrates or vegetables with protein.
Raw and roasted nuts and seeds i.e. walnuts. Eat some mixture of raw vegetables and a light protein.
Evening
Low Carbohydrates/ High Proteins/ Moderate to High Fats
When you are going to sleep at night this is a natural time for repair. Avoid concentrated carbohydrates because all the sugar power will not be used. Try to stick to protein and vegetables only.
Do vary your protein choices throughout the week to balance out the acidic effect of animal proteins, (high vitamin and mineral content), and do eat them with vegetables.
Acid vs. Alkaline foods will be discussed in the next newsletter.
Evening snacks ? again very low carbohydrates, for example, raw nuts and seeds, vegetables and animal proteins are good choices.
Food for kids ? kids will eat what you give them. At first there may be some foods they fight you with for example green beans. The more you offer it to them in varied ways the more they grow to liking them. If you start them on unhealthy sugary cereals, and snacks, (i.e. crackers, fruit roll ups, cookies), they won?t want the healthy options and then overload their systems with sugar and bad fats. These foods affect their weight, their energy, and more importantly for busy parents, their moods! If you want happy, healthy kids, feed them healthy foods.
Remember that when you are feeding your kids foods with food coloring or preservatives read the label and then compare them to household cleaners or office supplies. Some of the ingredients are the same! For example drinking an orange soda or eating a blue lollipop is like drinking an orange crayon or eating a blue pen. Eating ice cream or cookies and fast food is a lot like drinking turpentine, Drano, or eating pencil shavings. Commercial juice is a common kid filler and has a lot more sugar than fresh squeezed. To make it safer, it should be cut in half with water to dilute it. Put the water in first then the juice and the kids won?t know the difference.
Snack foods purchased form the health food store ? while these ?treats? are still refined, they are not filled with chemicals and, unlike more artificial counterparts, they do possess some nutritional benefit.
Read the label ? what are you putting into your children?s mouths, and yours? Eat what was created naturally ? not created by man. Who knows where the stuff created by man comes from, where it?s going to go, and what it is going to cause. Ask yourself why do we have so much heart disease, cancer, and adult illnesses in children? It is not just the lack of exercise. We are all inherently lazy and want to make convenient simple choices and those choices show up in our eating habits ? hurting ourselves and our children ? our future.

Research
Chiropractic is one of the most widely researched health techniques in the world. It is demanded of chiropractors to always be proving the benefits. Don?t get me wrong, we want to show you how chiropractic saves lives. People see miracles happening right in front of them and some say they still do not believe. Sound familiar?
For example ? Jane, who was hit a year and a half ago by a drunk driver, was thought never to survive and had become a quadriplegic. She walked into her chiropractor?s office on her own two legs without assistance mid March.
A 74 year old woman, whom at the age of 13 was told she would not walk much longer, would be confined to a wheelchair, and never have children, received chiropractic care and now has 5 beautiful children, several grandchildren and is still vibrant and healthy. The original diagnosis was MS, then later on Guilliane-Barr Syndrome. She has neither of these.
A 7 year old girl was kicked out of school for her ticks and outbursts from Tourettes. She was taking 8 different medications including antidepressants. She sought chiropractic care as a last resort. After 6 months, her symptoms were gone. After a year, she was off all medication and back in school. This little girl had wanted to die. Was her life over until she began chiropractic? Did chiropractic change or save her life? Yes! This little girl is now 11 years old, still receiving chiropractic care and has not had a return of any symptoms from her previous diagnosis.
What if these individuals were not told about chiropractic? Millions are not. Thousands have the fear of life put into them from medical doctors, neurologists, neighbours, and family members because they don?t understand or believe in it. They use scare tactics to make people think chiropractors will kill them by adjusting their neck.
I want you to know more individuals leave medical offices with strokes than patients ever do leaving a chiropractic office. What!
What! Some people have never heard of this. Many preach it yet know nothing about it. The latest RESEARCH shows that individuals entering either a medical or chiropractic office with symptoms of headache and neck pain, in rare cases. (Less than 1 in a million ? yet 1 in 160 kids in North America are now diagnosed with Autism ?80 % of them boys - often after being vaccinated). It has been shown that the individuals that are having strokes are already in the process of having a stroke and have gone to the health care provider to address it. Since there are more individuals still seeking medical help for headache and neck pain, this happens 80 times more in medical offices than in chiropractic offices. There has been no correlation found of a cervical/neck adjustment to cause a stroke. It is based on underlying conditions that are predisposing an individual to a stroke and it is coincidental that is occurring around the time of visiting a chiropractor. In the past when individuals have reported a stroke while seeing a chiropractor, placing the individuals head into extension to test for subluxation have aggravated the underlying condition. In individuals where this is the case, doing a shoulder check or washing their hair would create the same effect our outcome of a stroke.
Is it not also interesting that you never hear of it happening in medical offices when it actually happens 80 times more often? Makes you think doesn?t it? It should! Who is putting this information in the public eye stating chiropractors cause stroke?
This latest research was released last fall.

Another area controversial to some is adjusting newborns and children. For assisting you in making an informed decision please review the articles (thousands of them), on www.icpa4kids.org for more information.
Please be an informed individual for yourself and your family with any health procedure or interaction you undertake. That goes with taking a children?s Tylenol, or any medication. Remember those cough and cold remedies that were so great and are now off the shelves for children because it was found to harm them and in some instances kill them. Did you ever question them? Did you read the label of ingredients and wonder what they meant? Did you know Prozac was created to for a heart medication before it was labeled an antidepressant and has never been proven effective or safe in children? In the U.S. over a million children have been prescribed and are taking it. The number one side affect is increased suicide and aggression. Number two is heart attack. Heart Attack in children! Did you know Viagra initially was created as a heart medication and had interesting side effects so they re-branded it and changed the price?
Do you ask your pharmacist about alternatives? Do you ask your chiropractor about alternatives?
Be Informed ? Be Safe ? Stay Healthy ? In All Ways
Please share this information with your family and friends, your office lunch room crowd ? they deserve it
