5 weeks to go

September 2nd, 2010

This weekend a 6 hour bike followed by a 30 minute runn is on schedule for Saturday morning.  Sunday a long run.  I should have started with tomorrow – Friday – a 3000m swim and 20 minute easy bike.

I’m excited, yet tired – looking forward to this event.  The hard part is in the training and the race of course.  Then rest a while.  Not too long as we have signed up for Couer Delaine and Penticton for next year.  Gonna try and get some races in before my 40th and my oldest going to kindergarden.

On Thursday the 30th of September at 6pm we are having a small open house to talk about the race and for well wishers to come join us.  Come on out if you are in the area we would love to see you.

In practice we have scheduled a few things.  A wine tasting with the doc, coffee time with the doc and a few other up and coming opportunities for individuals to come ask questions about what we do.  Bring friends and family that have never been in to see us so they can learn about what we do.  I’ll post the dates soon.

I know coffee with the Doc is Nov 25th.  Dec 2nd around 11:30 we are doing a coffee and chocolate tasting.  Another event to come is wine tasing mixed with homemade truffles which can be ordered for Christmas.

Lots going on to build community and support.

Gotta run – literally 2 1/2 hours today

7 week countdown til takeoff

August 16th, 2010

7 weeks today I fly out to Kona for the big race October 9th – I can’t believe it is already here.  Wow!

I’m soooo excited and scared at the same time.   The adventure of a lifetime- a place where dreams come true – a test to see how far you can push yourself.

A chance to race with and for my Creator.  That is my vision for this race.  I can hardly wait to meet Him on the course along the way and have some great conversation.  Crossing the finish line..

I hope to complete in 15-15 1/2 hours.  Shorter the better.  We will see, this is my first full ironman and First time in Kona.  Hopefully not my last.

To update you on my ebay adventures.  I did order the wrong wheels my first go round but then was successful. I now have a pair of used tubular ZIPP wheels 650 c available for sale. Anyone interested drop me a line.

Right now in the practice we are all dressed in lululemon clothing, with Chiropractors with Compassion logos, to invite individuals to refer others in or donate to this great cause.  We are trying to raise money to help widows and orphans around the world.  I previously mentioned in another note that our last projects were in Santo Damingo where we built a 4 story building with a school, library, computer room, and arts studio and in a neighbouring community a water collection project for 100 families.  This October while I am in Kona several chiropractors will be visiting these completed projects.

In the Spring some of these same chiropractors were visiting Africa and got to help and serve thousands of individuals.  In 2 1/2 hours this gorup of chiropractors were able to adjust over 1600 individuals in one area while they were there.  It is amazing how many people were helped.

Thank you for your continued support gotta run here.  Chat soon

Triathlon is Pricey

July 27th, 2010

I never thought I would be one to get into the gadget of bikes.  Biking is not my strongest suit – but as I have trained more and more I am liking it more.  Funny how that works.   Anyway, since all of this I too have discovered Ebay.  I used it for the first time and picked up some wheels for racing.  I am very excited and looking forward to them arriving.  I only hope I ordered the right ones.  I got excited that I saw some on Ebay and the auction was running out – and I wone them in the end.  I did not fully research them as I normally would have.  They should arrive any day and I’ll let you know how I made out with my purchase.

Jumping to another thought – I was reminded yesturday that it is ok to ask for help and pay attention to what you focus on.  I’ll write more on these topics later.

August 1st 1/2 ironman Calgary

July 27th, 2010

Hello everyone – I know my topics are fleeting everywhere.  I do apologize to those of you whom are having a hard time following my thoughts.  I, as you all do, have lots on the go.

This Sunday in Calgary I will be competing in my second 1/2 ironman.  I am excited and nervous.  I hope the weather will be great.  I know Ghost Lake will be around 17 degrees so not so fun – but expected temperature.

My goal is to get to 6:30 or less across the finish line.  I start at 6:20am.  We bike around the Ghost Lake area towards Cochrane, into Cochrane and out the big hill south towards Calgary and the Glenmore Park/resevoir area where the run will take place.

This is a training race for Kona October 9th which is fast approaching.  I am to do a 3 by 10 minute sauna today for my taper week.  I like this kind of workout.

I have officially started collecting money for Chiropractors with Compassion for the Kona race.  The goal is $10,000.   We are at $1100.00  For more information check out Chiropractors with Compassion Canada.

If you wish to make a donation call us or stop in.  780 484 2272 or West Edmonton Family Chiropractic Studio  #203, 9670-142 street Edmonton.

RU IN

June 22nd, 2010

RU in – in to your life – are you playing full out – RU fully in!  Inness.  Playing to your utmost – putting it all out there – physically mentally emotionally, spiritually.  After a crossfit workout do you go run laps around the building to sink in?

I am just back with Dr. Mac from Nashillee Tensessee and wow – the world is transforming form the inside out – life changing – when you come back from something like that life hits you – push back – and resistance to going forward in all areas of life.

Chiropractors are a different breed – we are passionate, obsessed, and know lies are on the line.  When you go to a principled chiropractic office that is connected with the knowledge of how to change lies (sorry my letter still not working), it is frustrating when people don’t get it.

1.253 billion annual adertising budget for Pfizer eery year, 48.4 billion in sales in 2007, 18.7 million in sales for Lipitor in 2007 knowingly that it does not work and cholesterol and high fat diets are not the real cause, 4.8 billion in profits in the first quarter in 2010 for the sale of Lipitor.

People wonder why they don’t hear more about chiropractic, why don’t we know that by reconnecting the brain and the body the body can heal and we don’t need toxins to do the job.
Chiropractic first!

I know this blog is choppy there are so many politics that is stopping people from becoming who they truly are supposed to be, not someone lying on their back looking at a ceiling popping 125 pills eery day, haing had surgery on eery part of their body!!

I’ll check back soon – when my head is clearer and I can break this down into 3 or 4 posts.

Training

June 7th, 2010

So eeryone how are you?  How is your training?  Are you actually training or just going through the paces?

There is a difference – yes you can do the task, chore, workout in front of you – or you can train it.

So are you training?  Are you pushing yourself beyond your limits so you can attain a noticeable difference, an improement?

(Yes I still hae a letter on my keyboard not working)

What gets in your way?  Most of the time it is ourself.

This weekend I was to do a 75 minute run and the next day a 2 1/2 hour bike with a 20 minute run – did I do it?  No – Wow!  the dream of a lifetime is upon me and I didn’t do it?  Why – well I could blame eerything and eeryone around me – but it was myself that made the ultimate decision.

How many excuses can we come up with not to do the ery thing we need to do to acheie our dreams? – we ourseles are holding us back.  What is it that is holding you back?

You don’t feel like you are able to do it?  Something that happened in the past tells you or replays in your brain it is too fearful to go there – so don’t self sabotage instead?  What is it?
You need to figure it out so you can take that next leap.  Speaking of leaps – Check out Stee Farber and Radical Edge and his second book Radical Leap  – they are amazing fast reads.  They will help you get oer some obstacles for sure.

Today I am resting – tomorrow I will do my 2 1/2 hour bike and 20 minute run.  I will then Wednesday do my 2800m swim and 75 minute run.  Get back on track – jump back on the horse so to speak.

I challenge you to jump back on your horse and surpass any limits you hae eer surpassed before.

Thought for the day

May 17th, 2010

Did you know in some of the latest research the high correlation between early mensuration, puberty is caused by a high intake of animal products.  This also correlates with greater likelyhood of getting cancer.  Not just breast and prostate (hormone related cancer’s).

Did you know in North America we have one of the highest consumptions of dairy and yet have one of the highest number of individuals with osteoperosis.  So the intake of dairy is not correlating with calcium absorption and prevention of osteoperosis.  Where does the calcium then go?  Into muscle cells, into heart cells?  Places where it should not.

Cancers associated with increased consumption of Animal Products – yes this includes cheese and ice cream

Bladder cancer, brain cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, endometrial cancer, intestinal cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, lymphona, oralpharyngeal cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, stomach cancer.

Question

Would you allow your child to smoke?  Allowing our children to eat junk, candy, processed food as children leads them toward the same likelihood that they will develop cancer in the future as a smoker.

Crazy eh!

Think before you eat. Eat to live not live to eat.

How to get the Benefits of Soy

September 21st, 2009

Soy – it is now in every processed food out theire.  It is often in the form of soybean oil or the emulsifying agen soy lecithin which is made from sludge.

A whopping 75 percent of the edible consumption of fats oils in the US in 2006.

85% perceive soy as healthy

33 percent eat soy foods once a month or more

70 percent believe soybean oil is healthy

3 in 5 believe it can help reduce obesity and 84 % agree with comsuming 25 grams or soy protein per day reduces your risk of heart disease as claimed by the FDA.

Soy is not the health food you believe it is.

The vast majority on the market is NOT a health food.   Thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reprodcutive disorders, and infertility – — even cancer and heart disease.

It contains a large quantity of inhibitors that deter your enzymes neeed for protein digestion.

Consuming too many of soy’s antinutrients is extensive gastric distress and chronic deficiences in amino acid uptake.  this can result in pancreatic impairment and cancer.

Soy contains hemagglutinin.  This inhibits oxygen take-up and growth.  Also contains growth depressant substances.

It also contains elements that lead to depressed thryoid function, prevent absorption of minerals and can block estorgen.    Two glasses of soymilk a day for one month can altera  woman’s menstral cycle.

It can also disrupt endocrine function, cause infertility, and promote breaset cancer.

Soy also has high levels of aluminim as it is processed in acid-washing aluminim tanks.

Soy forumla has 80 times hight manganese than is found in breast mild.  Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pills’ worth of estorgen every day.

This estrogen can irreversibly harm baby’s future sexual development and reproductive health.

Soy foods are both heavily sprayed with pesticides and more often than not genetically modified.

I recommend you NOT consume pesticides or genetically modified foods if you want to be optimally healthy.

 Now WHAT type is Healthy?

Non-fermented is bad

ONLY fermented is good.   This process allows the pytate levels to reduce and alllows the beneficial properties to become available to your digestive system.

 Fermented products include

Tempeh

Miso

Natto

Soy Sauce

One main benefit of fermented Soy includes Vit K2 – essential to build stong bones and promote your heart health.

Vit K for Koagulation – proper blood clotting.

Helps with a protein osteocalcin which lays down bown – acting as a glue to incorporacte calcium inot your bones.

This vitamin is useful to fight the signs of agin and it is actually a stronger antioxidant than vitamin E or coenzyme Q10.

So unless soy is fermented you are better off avoiding it.

Chiropractic what is it?

January 14th, 2010

Chiropractic is a lifestyle, a passion and helps people in ways they can not even imagine.   Chiropractic is not just about pain it is about changing your life so you can live the life you have been created for.  By reconnecting your brain and your body, which by the way Christopher Reeve spent his life doing after his accident.  By reconnecting your brain will be able to control the function, coordination and healing that it was created for.

The latest research shows that having impropoer motion and alignment of your spine putting pressure on your spinal cord is highly correlated with dementia, chronic inflammatory disease and autoimmune disorders.  There is also research showing that it is essential that children have healthy motion and curves in their spine as it is a contributing factor in 90% of brain development.    One more study recently found that ADHD and Parkinsons share the same nerve tracts in the spine entering through the cerebellum to the left side of the brain.  (Dr.Michael Hall. USA).  If you would like more information on this research check out Dr. Michael Hall.  Another source is Dr. Deed Harrison.

By removing subluxation – or lack of motion and improper alignment the brain and the body can work together again as it was created to.  Every day your body needs to repair and replace a minimum of 180 billion cells.  When you are not eating right, not exercising, not sleeping right, not drinking enough water, drinking too much, smoking or stressed out your body needs to repair and replace more damaged cells.  Over time it can’t keep up and that is when disease process start.

40 day challenge progress report

January 28th, 2010

We had a great turnout for the 40 day challenge  – people are changing their lives as we speak with not only exercise and nutrition, but stress management, and introducing chiropractic into their stewardship plans for their life.

As we start eating better our bodies kick start into gear with more energy and vitatlity.  Think about everything you do.  Ask yourself is this something that will lead me towards the vision I have for my life.?  Is what I am putting in my mouth something filled with life and will move me towards my vision or put me further from it?  Is sitting on the couch watching TV moving me towards my goal of playing on the floor with my great great grand children or travelling round the world or is it stopping me from getting there?

Something to think about!

9 days in to the 40 days

February 1st, 2010

wow – how hard it is to make change – and do the right tings to improve our health.  My goals -not drink coffee be it cafeinated or decaf, have veggies at each meal and some protein, get up in the morning before 5am daily, one piece of bread a day, and no dairy.  Well I do have to admit I have had 1 1/2 caffeinated coffee and one decaf.  I have managed to avoid dairy and am doing pretty well on the 1 piece of bread a day challenge.  I am currently training for an event so incorporating more exercise was not a necessity.

I hope everyone is doing fantastic on their 40 day challenge.  I can’t wait to hear how you are making out.

Challenge yourself and your family – are you working at investing in your health every day?  Challenge yourself to have more family or time, more veggies, more sleep, manage stress better, do a budget, do a calendar to plan in exercise.

Sincerely

Dr. Wendy

14 days to go

February 18th, 2010

40 days is not long but it is long when yo are trying not to do something you have formed as a habit such as drinking coffee.  The exercises for me is easy, the no dairy – but the coffeeis still a struggle.  I will continue on this challenge even after the 40 days to totally eliminate it.  Coffee is so toxic to our digestive system and our digestive system makes up 80% of our immune system.  Coffee can and does kill the lining of your digestive system thus creating food sensitivities, leaky gut, IBS, you name it.  Get off of it if you can.  There is a great reference out there – one of many – for you to check out.  It is 7 weeks to a settled stomach by Ronald L. HOffman MD.

I hope you have outstanding goals so you can reach for the starts.  If we set our goals too small we never truly reach our full potential.  Gigantic goals are ones we always build towards and grow upon, but allow us to see how truly capable and amazing we are.

Calcium Supplements – STOP them

February 23rd, 2010

We take in more cation’s of calcium in our diet every day than any other mineral.  When testing for osteoperosis they test the lower lumbar spine and proximal femur head.  The demineralizatinion in this area of the spine is found to be from excessive cortisol, a stress hormone, leaching calcium from our body.   If we are truly osteoperotic we will have a loss all over our body so we should really check or test our distal limbs too like feet and hands.  Stress – increases thyroid fucntion (leading to it’s shutdown), then increases release of cortisol form our adrenals which steals our calcium.  Where does all the extra calcium go we eat then?  Well it shows up in our blood serum when we test it, but it is also then being placed in our tendons, and muscles tissue leading to inflammatory conditions and other diseases such as fibromyalgia.

Stop taking extra calcium.  Most of the reason we don’t absorb it properly in the first place when we eat it is becuase we don’t exercise properly.  When you exercise you must do weight bearing exercise to absorb calcium!

Ponder that one for a while.

40 day challenge

March 4th, 2010

It has become the 47 day challenge as I am off to Tornoto this afternoon to learn more how to serve you better.  I belong to a an amazing group of chiropractor across Canada and in the US working together to change the world.  We work together withon our communities but also through Chiropractors with Compassion reaching out to those severely in need.

While away I will be transformed, physically, menatlly and emotionally – as we all eveolve and change each day, I work hard to grow more in all of these areas.  Balance and Peace is the ultimate goal and having a closer relationship with God, my Father.  This is a daily work in progress.

I know this message is a bit convoluted, but I wanted to get a post up to you today so you know where we are at and where the challengge is.  Our follow up for the challenge has moved to Thursday March 11th at 6pm.  See you all then.

Renovations

March 4th, 2010

March 29 to April 4th we will be closed for renovations to serve you better.  In order to help our team stay healthy they are gteting a new recption area where they can stand or sit to serve you, we are opening up our education centre and adjusting area to let the sunshine flow through the office.  The office is 11 years old so it needs some new flooring and paint.

We look forward to seeing you all in our newly renovated space that will add more energy to your care.

In the futre we will be holding more education classes in our practice.  Some being directed more to those whom are starting families with doula’s, hypno-birthing, not to leave out the essential part of chiropractic, but to make people aware of how natural pregnancy and childbirth is.  Yoga is also in the works.

We are also looking at in the future having our own x-ray in the office so we can help all of you more efficiently.

Blessings to everyone.

Renovations

March 20th, 2010

We are catching up with the times!  Having had 3 children over the last 4 years I have been putting off and putting off renovations in the office.  Now is the time.  Friday March 26th to Monday April 5th the office is closed for our renovations.

We are making ergonomic work pods for our chiropractic assistants at the front so they can stand or sit throughout the day.  We are also opening up our reception so we have more room for our education sessions.  the adjusting rooms will now be open concept with 4 foot walls.  More light will be shining in from outside as well as a result brightening up the whole space.  Along with some new flooring and some new paint.  We are very excited and look forward to the new work space.

I do hope it will be all up and running on April 6th (Tuesday), if it is not we can manage as long as we have the adjusting tables and a couple of computers to keep on top of our adjusting plans.

In June we will have a big open house to show off the new space.  Why so late – we have several trade shows, corporate talks, and the Mother’s Day Run/Walk which we are sponsoring this year in Old Strathcona, Edmonton.  There is always a few thousand people there, so this year we will have a team of walkers and runners, and a booth at the event to promote lifetime chiropractic care.  Come on out and have some fun with us.  May 16th I believe is the date.  I will double check on that and keep you posted.

Please also note on the third Friday of April we are having a planning class on how to make time for Fitness/Exercise.  It will be at 6pm at the office so come on down.

1/2 IRONMAN OCEANSIDE CALIFORNIA

March 20th, 2010

Keep an eye on my progress at Oceanside California on Saturday March 27th.  I am competing in my first half ironman.  My dream is to do a full ironman before the age of 40.  I still have time.  I am excited, and nervous.  I trained hard but could have always done more.  With working, family, and life it has been a challenge.  I can’t wait to enjoy the journey.

My husband is also competing.  We fly out on Thursday and come back on the Tuesday after.  We will get to have a couple of days to re-coup before returning home.

Plese think of us – send some prayers our way as we take on this event.

Train With Me

April 20th, 2010

Ok guys and gals – lets train together – be it your first time exercising – working towards your first walk eent, run eent, or triathlon.  I will post what i am doing throughout the week for you to fllow along with me.  Do your best to try some of the workouts.  I will not post the full workout unless a special request or I can refer you to Craig Murdoch at Mission 3 triathlon training to help you along.  Today is swim and run.  Tuesdays are long runs.  So for some of you that may be a long walk or if you are just starting a walk for 15 minutes.  If you don’t swim try something different so you do 2 different workouts in a day.  yesturday was a bike ride for an hour.

So if you hae not noticed i am missing a letter on my keyboard that is not working.  Can you guess what it is?  Anywhoo.  I will keep you posted as we count down to Oct 9th 2010 Kona Hawaii.

Training

May 13th, 2010

You know sometimes even when your intentions are great not everything gets done – even with the best laid out plans.  Here we are 7 weeks post California and i am finally getting into the groove of training agian. A swim and run on Tuesday and a swim and bike yesturday.  Today a 10km fast run is the goal at the end of the day today.

We will soon start counting down the days but we are 4 1/2 months away from the big event – so fear steps in – the knowledge of the almighty Kona winds and heat on the run.  Remind yourself that each workout makes the race easier.  The less workouts I do the harder the race will be.

I am currently researching a new nutrition approach.  Since 1990 I have been a vegetarian of various degrees.  From being completely vegan, to lacto ovo, you name it.  I am now looking more to live my motto eat to live.  I talk about nutrition briefly every week in my doctor’s reports and how important it is to eat to live vs. live to eat.   I am currently reading Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.  and another book 80/10/10 on the importance of eating real foods, raw foods.  The purpose – to be healthier – not for weight loss, but prevent inflammation, quicker recovery form workouts and greater performance while racing but day to day.  I recommend checking this out.

Dr. Michelle and I are away this weekend at a chiropractic course for 2 days so say some prayers for my husband looking after all 3 kids on his own.

Pray for us as we work towards being better individuals, doctors, friends, spouses thus so we can serve more.

Blessings to all

Focus – how to get it – how to find it if we have lost it

May 13th, 2010

Wow! it’s a tough one to battle.  I don’t know anyone that can focus 100%of the time.

How do I do it?  For me over the last 7 years I am most focused when mI am in the word, reading the bible, journaling, and have my year planned out.  once a year I sit down with my husband, my business associate, and colleagues I work closely with and plan out what will happen over the year.  That way when things come up the big picture is in place.  the 5 years 10 year and 50 year plans are set and can fluctuate when goals are met, but overall continually working to serve and help more.

These goals and this focus is on God, Family and Chiropractic.  Fmail includes self and friends, relationships.  Working constantly on keeping these things in balance is a full time job.

Spiritual, mental and emotional balance requires discipline, morning time with God, Reading and journalling and exercise. These three things helf clear my mind so I can hear and focus on God and his direction in my life.  I don’t always get my morning time in, in the morning, sometimes it happens at my desk, at lunch or before bed.  If I miss it, I crave it.

When I miss is day after day – my focus disappears, I pick on little things, get upset easier, and am not myself.  My joy disappears and is overshadowed by the negativity seeping in.
As an aside: Isn’t it funny how 20 amazing things can happen and then one bad thing can overshadow it and make all those other 20 things seem insignificant.  That has to do with focus.  When you focused and heading towards your goals those 20 things stand out and the one negative is washed away.  How important is that one negative thing in the grand scheme and 5 minutes from n0w or

Politics and Education

As the chiropractic profession is changing politically I am becoming more involved with education and research.  I am dedicating approximately 100 hours a year to courses across North America and correspondence, along with doing some in office research.  If you would like more information on the research we are starting please do call.  We are looking for 40 volunteers over the next 2 years for this project.  These individuals must not have received any chiropractic care within the last year.

In our practice we are also ramping up our practice member benefit by implementing new computer software.  We now have the ability to mark your films with a digitizing program to measure your curves, and compare your progress vs. doing it by hand saving time, but giving you more visual feedback.  We have also acquired a program to demonstrate to you your current posture and the postural changes that occur with care throughout your course of care within our practice.  It is amazing how research helps in so many ways.  We know and you know your posture is the window to your spinal health.
We have known for many years the importance of correcting the curve of your spine and having a 42 degree cervical curve and 63 degree lumbar curve is optimal for spinal cord health.  We just need to help more and more people understand this.  So I am asking you to make sure you educate yourself on “chiropractic,”  as it can change your life now and in the future.  It can also change your families life.  Get them in for a wellness check up.
